When we studied existing utility boxes, a few common frustrations stood out. People often found them cluttered, difficult to organize, and inconvenient to carry from one place to another. The time it took to set them up also made the experience less smooth, especially when cooking outdoors. From our research, users clearly expressed the need for something more practical. They wanted a durable box that’s lightweight yet sturdy, easy to carry around, and designed to neatly store all their utensils and cooking essentials. Most importantly, it had to be weather-resistant so they could rely on it in any environment.

We explored compact, rounded-corner geometries to enhance durability during transport while maintaining a modern outdoor aesthetic. Sketching, CAD ideation, and scale foam modeling were used to refine handle positioning, latch accessibility, and proportion.
We refined the design through focused iterations, aligning user feedback with manufacturing feasibility. Latches were improved for one-handed, gloved use while ensuring secure locking. The handle was adjusted for better comfort and balance, and compartments were reshaped for organized, clutter-free setups. All changes were evaluated for easy manufacturability, ensuring readiness for production without compromising the user experience.
When we set out to redesign the camping utility box, we knew it had to be more than just a place to store utensils. The original design was purely functional, a generic container that got the job done but lacked character. Our goal was to transform the box from a simple carrying case into a central, indispensable piece of gear that elevated the entire camping experience.

The utility box body is crafted from matte-finished metal, providing a rugged, scratch-concealing surface that blends seamlessly into outdoor environments while maintaining a premium feel. The handle and locks are made from durable plastic in a warm terracotta tone, ensuring visibility and easy identification during campsite setups. This combination balances stealth and usability, making the box adventure-ready while retaining a clean, purposeful aesthetic.
The utility box was designed to seamlessly integrate multiple functions within a compact form factor. The mechanism prioritized quick access, modular storage, and smooth opening/closing for ease of use at campsites. Special attention was given to hinge durability, lock reliability, and ergonomic handles to ensure stability under load while maintaining portability. The integration of compartments and fold-out surfaces was engineered to maximize space efficiency without compromising structural strength.
Detailed CAD modelling formed the foundation of the engineering process. Each component was digitally prototyped to validate fit, tolerance, and assembly sequence before physical production. Simulation tools were used to analyze load distribution, hinge performance, and stress points under outdoor usage conditions. This virtual testing allowed the team to optimize material thickness, reduce unnecessary weight, and maintain the box’s rugged durability while keeping the design user-friendly and manufacturable.
The design was refined with a strong focus on manufacturability and scalability. Standard material sizes and efficient tooling methods were considered to minimize waste and lower production costs. The team ensured that critical parts like hinges, locks, and handles could be easily sourced or fabricated, reducing complexity in the supply chain. By simplifying assembly steps and aligning tolerances with practical manufacturing capabilities, the final design balanced robustness, cost-effectiveness, and ease of production.
